95 points "A hat-trick for Menzies now, although I know Mattinson was not as keen on the 2004 as I was (87 points to my 94). This elicited an unsolicited comment of ‘ooo this is nice’ (or something along those lines) from JP, which is a sure sign we’re on a winner - she’s a very fussy girl after all. Shame about the cork mind you. Fragrant and fresh with a mix of bright small berry fruits and black cherries, dark chocolate, aniseed and mint with classy cedar oak (although it shows a tweak of vanilla nougat too, which settles down pretty quickly). It’s lively and long with persistent but fine grained tannins and excellent flavour. With minor reservations about the level of acidity, the overall impression is one of balance and sophistication - a classic Coonawarra Cabernet. 94 points ""In general, I find Coonawarra a vastly over-rated region for cabernet Sauvignon, with a few noticeable exceptions, one of which is Yalumba’s the Menzies, a Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 300 liter French and American hogsheads for 22 months. The 2003 The Menzies Cabernet Sauvignon reveals gorgeous notes of creosote, blueberry liqueur, black-currants, licorice, and cedar. Full-bodied with great fruit purity, real stature, wonderful sweetness (from glycerine), ripe tannin, and a long, heady finish, it can be drunk now or cellared for 15 or more years." 94 points "Strong purple-crimson; a strikingly rich and opulent Coonawarra cabernet, with blackcurrant, cassis and plum in a full-throated oak coat, ripe tannins on the finish. Will absolutely outlive its cork in average Australian cellaring conditions." Best 2018-2033
