" This fantastic wine comes from a small, sandy plot on the Tarlants estate in the village of Oeuilly. The vineyard was planted in the 1962 without the use of an American rootstock; in the 1950's the area was covered in trees with wild, pre-phyloxera vines growing up them! These vines, now planted in rows, but still only on their own French roots, give us a glimpse of what Champagne was like before the phyloxera louse wrecked havoc on the region. The Vigne d'Antan has a very rich Chassagne-Montrachet like nose that combines cream, honey and minerals. In the mouth, the delicate bead emphasizes the Champagne's creaminess. The finish is quite dry- the dosage is only 5 grams per liter. It is an experience completely unlike any Blanc de Blancs from the Cotes de Blancs, not only due to the lack of American rootstock, but also because of the warmer conditions in Oeuilly. This is a one of a kind wine, only 2300 bottles produced, entirely 1999 although not labeled as a vintage, so please do not hesitate if it is of interest to you. -Gary Westby, K&L"
