"Petit Verdot was probably brought to France by the Romans, and is today mostly used to add stiffness and complex tannins to Cabernet blends. It takes very well to the Riverina where it translates into a fruity, flavoursome meat n 3 veg style of wine. Drought conditions this year led to an earlier vintage than previous years. Dry weather and warm sunny days with low crop levels resulted in wines of great flavour intensity. Fruit was selected on ripeness and flavour profiles. There was minimal handling throughout the winemaking process which included cool maceration on skins and lengthy, warm fermentation for gentle flavour extraction. Maturation in new and used French and Hungarian barriques. Alcohol 14.5% -- Vibrant purple with crimson hues. Blackcurrant and plum aromas. The palate exhibits rich mocha characters, dark berry fruits, sweet pepper and silky tannins. It is intensely fruit driven with integrated coconut and toasty oak flavours and beautiful mid palate weight. "De Bortoli family is producing some gluggable straight varietal reds. This one is bright crimson and has toffee apple scents. Juicy plum flavour dominates the front of the palate and pastille and thyme fruit elements combine with toasty oak on the middle palate. Try with spicy Italian sausages or steak and mushroom pie!" -Newcastle Herald, "Dark berry and licorice aromatics. Agreeable!" -Winewise, “This is a sleek, stylish, Claret-like Australian red!" -Vanmag.com"
