91 points "Given 23 months in barrel (which explains why Busch elected to hold-off showing me the corresponding 2010 until next summer), Sleight of Hand’s 2009 The Illusionist – sourced from Red MOUNTAIN Vineyards, Walla Walla’s Blue Mountain Vineyard and Lewis Vineyard near Prosser; and mingling 27% Syrah and 8% Cabernet France with its Cabernet Sauvignon – was treated to 60% new barrels, the highest percentage in any of the wines I tasted from them on this occasion. Yet, I wasn’t aware of the oak as such. Cassis and herbal essences, juniper berry and black pepper offer a pungent aromatic display, then team up with bitter dark chocolate, carob, and an undertone of crushed stone for an engagingly mouthwatering but metaphorically dark finish. This seamless, polished and powerfully expressive cuvee ought to be worth following for at least the better part of a decade. For lovers of Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine was built for you! Composed of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Syrah, it is dark, rich, and built for a long life in the cellar. This wine was aged for 23 months in 60% new French oak. Composed of all free-run juice, it is black in the center, dark red to the rim. This wine smells like a bowl of plums and black cherries, surrounded by fresh ground coffee beans. It is rich and ripe in the mouth, with flavors of currants, more cherries and blackberries, and surrounded by a cloak of finely grained tannins. The natural acids frame the finish, giving this wine the ability to lay down for a decade or more! Wine Maker's notes -- On the heels of our 95 point Illusionist from 2008 (Wine Spectator) comes this blockbuster of a wine! The 2009 Illusionist is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Syrah, and 8% Cabernet Franc. The Cabernet Sauvignon was sourced from Red Mtn. Vineyard and Blue Mtn. Vineyard. It provides the structure, minerality, and spicy blue and red fruits to the wine. It is balanced by the Syrah from Lewis Vineyard in the Yakima Valley, which is famous for its red raspberry flavor profile, and the Cabernet Franc from Blue Mtn. Vineyard, with classic tobacco leaf and cassis notes famous for this grape. The ripe tannins and balanced acids ensure a long life ahead for this amazing wine. Cheers!" Best 2013-2020
