92 points "Built for aging. Extremely well made, with concentrated aromas of dried berry, fruit and spices. Full-bodied, with full tannins which are wonderfully fine-tuned and well-integrated. Long, long fruity finish. Best after 2000. 3,500 cases made." Best 2000-

"Tasted by Vino Me on 10/23/2006 & rated 95 points: I bought this for $52 on release 5 years ago. I brought this to a dinner at an Italian restaurant with Otis, Haggis, Allred, his girlfriend and Mark H. This is my favorite supetuscan and despite cinsistenly high quality in these wines I have always found that the 1997 has stood out. Here are my ratings on prior vintages (I have put a range where I have tried the wine more than once with different scores): 1988: 90-93 (3 times) 1995: 91 1996: 90 1997: 94-95 (3 times) 1998: 91-94 (2 times) 1999: 91 2000: 91 2001: 92 I decanted it for about 1 hour before we drank it. Heavily sedimented. Solid ruby red color with no signs of bricking. Very pretty nose filled with violets and some coffee and tar. Notes of ripe cherry and raw meat. Very well balanced acidity and tannins. Exceedingly smooth texture and a long finish. I paired this with a veal chop stuffed with pancetta, spinach and cheease and it was an excellent match. 95 points. I believe this is the second time I have tasted this wine and it was no less impressive tonight. Garnet color, with smoky plum, red berries and meat. I love the nose on this wine. Wonderfully balanced, with plum, meaty red fruit and cherry flavors. Long finish. (77 views) Tasted by Anonymous on 10/13/2006 & rated 87 points: A bit musty at first. Corked? After a bit of air, the fruit was revived and feared of a flawed bottle subsided. Still a bit mute and short. Nice, but not something I would make a special search for. (252 views) Tasted by Mark on 3/11/2006 & rated 90 points: Big and chock full of tannins, tried it on open and then for the next six hours. It didn’t open up as much as I thought it would, I preferred it at hour 3. The initial earthy and slightly bretty notes seemed to subside after an hour showing thick cherry and plum notes. Still, I’m thinking of wait a few years on this to try to get an tannic finish smoothened out. Karen and I poured him a glassful and enjoyed the rest with our scallop soup, waygu tenderloin and octopus salad. Rich and wonderful aromas of plums and currants with a smooth balanced and even mouth. The wine is nicely evolved and ready for drinking. (875 views) Tasted by gksmith on 2/2/2006: wine was cloudy. (828 views) Tasted by futronic on 10/22/2005 & rated 91 points: Leather, barnyard, and red fruit on nose. Medium-bodied, very drying in the mouth. Fruit hidden behind the tannins, but still there. Shows cherry and plum. Way too young. Needs another 5+ years for tannins to soften. Nice 35s finish. (159 views) Tasted by beachbum on 9/18/2005 & rated 93 points: 4 hours in the decanter. Open up with bbq sirloin steak. Bam this is on tonight! A very fruity, funky cherry cough syrup nose, with some strong alcohol coming through. Very concentrated fruit, decent acids, great with food. I think this is a point tonight. (1247 views) Tasted by ERoss on 3/17/2005 & rated 89 points: White Burgundy and Tuscan Reds (Grant's, West Hartford, CT): [Served with beef duo - short rib and sliced tenderloin.] Funky nose, with some almost yeasty, primal qualities. That blew off enough to reveal black cherry liqueur, vanilla oak, and tar-like aromas. Not showing much on palate other than in-your-face tannins and resinous, thick mouthfeel. Lots of earthy, tobacco notes on the palate with really solid mouthfeel and structure. This wine is BIG and easily among my favorites of the evening. Hmm, my notes appear to be getting shorter, must be getting tired... (2514 views) Tasted by Vino Me on 8/20/2002 & rated 95 points: 2001 'Tre Bicchieri' award winner. Sampled the 1995 vintage at the vinyard on our 1998 Tuscany trip. Wonderful. WS #43 wine of 2000. 100% Sangiovese. It threw a decent amount of sediment. Astringent before decanting. After decanting for 3 hours it was rich and well integrated with silky tannins. Typical floral nose. Notes of cherry and violet in this medium/full bodied wine. Long finish. Elegant style. 94-95. Hold until 2005. (1392 views) Professional Tasting History (private) "
